Trustmark (NASDAQ:TRMK) Reports Inline Q2 Earnings, Underlying Strength Bolsters Quality Stock Story

Trustmark Corp (NASDAQ:TRMK) reported operating results for the second quarter of 2026 that landed close to analyst expectations, with both revenue and earnings per share falling within a narrow range of consensus estimates. The stock, which had been trending slightly lower over the past month, showed no significant after-market move following the release.

Q2 Results: Inline With Estimates

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Trustmark generated total revenue of $211.13 million. This came in about 1.6% below the analyst consensus estimate of $214.61 million. On the bottom line, the company reported operating (non-GAAP) earnings per share of $0.97, marginally below the $0.9816 consensus by roughly 1.2%. Given that both deviations are underneath the 2% threshold, the quarter is best described as inline with expectations rather than a beat or a miss.

The reported GAAP net income was $63.5 million, or $1.08 per diluted share, but that figure included $0.11 per share from non-routine transactions: a $4.2 million pre-tax gain from the sale of delinquent mortgage loans and a $4.9 million pre-tax gain from an exchange of Visa shares. Excluding those items, operating net income was $56.7 million.

Underlying Operating Strength

Beyond the headline numbers, the quarter contained several positive operational details. Net interest income (on a fully taxable-equivalent basis) rose 3.1% sequentially to $168.6 million, helping lift the net interest margin by three basis points to 3.84%. The margin expansion was driven by a decline in the cost of interest-bearing liabilities, even as the bank continued to grow its deposit base.

Deposits increased $358.7 million, or 2.3%, from the prior quarter to $16.1 billion, while the cost of total deposits fell four basis points to 1.59%. Notably, noninterest-bearing deposits grew by $277.9 million during the quarter, now making up 21% of total deposits. Loan balances, excluding a $73.8 million mortgage loan sale, increased $108.9 million, or 0.8%, linked-quarter.

Credit quality improved sharply. Nonperforming assets declined 47.3% from the prior quarter to 0.39% of loans held for investment and held for sale, driven largely by the mortgage loan sale. The allowance for credit losses stood at 1.07% of loans HFI, and the allowance covered nearly 798% of nonaccrual loans.

Wealth Management and Mortgage Production

Wealth management revenue grew 5.1% sequentially to $10.9 million, reflecting higher trust and brokerage fees. Mortgage loan production jumped 27.2% from the prior quarter to $477.0 million, though mortgage banking revenue was little changed at $8.9 million due to lower gain-on-sale margins.

Capital and Share Repurchases

Trustmark maintained a strong capital position, with a CET1 ratio of 11.87% and a total risk-based capital ratio of 14.47%. The company repurchased $21.1 million of its common stock in the second quarter, part of a $100 million authorization for 2026. Tangible book value per share rose to $31.07, up 1.6% from the prior quarter and 8.1% year-over-year.

Market Reaction and Outlook

The stock had been drifting lower in the weeks leading up to the report, with a 0.6% decline over the past month and a slight negative move in the last week. The after-market response was flat, consistent with the inline nature of the results. The press release did not include specific forward guidance for Q3 or full-year 2026, but management noted the successful conversion of core banking systems to new platforms, which they expect will enhance efficiency going forward. Analyst estimates currently point to Q3 2026 revenue of approximately $219.2 million and EPS of $1.02, with full-year 2026 revenue seen at $864.0 million and EPS of $3.99.
