Mativ Holdings (NYSE:MATV) Beats Q2 Estimates with Record Adjusted EBITDA

MATIV HOLDINGS INC (NYSE:MATV) delivered a second-quarter earnings and revenue beat, with adjusted EPS of $0.50 comfortably ahead of the $0.29 consensus estimate and revenue of $531.8 million topping the $518.7 million analysts had modeled. Management described the period as the strongest financial quarter since the company was formed four years ago, citing organic sales growth, cost discipline, and record adjusted EBITDA.

Earnings versus expectations

The headline numbers came in well above consensus, even before adjusting for one-time items. Reported net income swung to $3.6 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, from a net loss of $9.5 million, or $(0.18) per share, in the same quarter last year.

Key quarterly metrics:

  • Sales: $531.8 million, up 1.2% year over year and 1.7% on an organic basis
  • Adjusted EPS: $0.50 versus the $0.29 consensus estimate
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $75.0 million, up 12% year over year
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin: 14.1%, up 130 basis points from the prior year period
  • Cash from operating activities: $67.9 million, up 18%
  • Free cash flow: $60.4 million, up 24%

The adjusted figures exclude, among other items, $0.25 per share of purchase accounting expenses tied to prior acquisitions and a $0.16 per share loss on debt extinguishment, both of which weighed on the reported result.

Segment performance

Both operating segments contributed to the profit growth. Sustainable & Adhesive Solutions (SAS), which covers tapes, labels, liners, specialty paper, packaging, and healthcare products, generated sales of $330.1 million, up 2.8% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA for the segment rose 18.8% to $50.5 million, with margin expanding 210 basis points to 15.3%.

Filtration & Advanced Materials (FAM) posted sales of $201.7 million, down 1.3% on a reported basis but only 0.1% lower organically, as favorable pricing and currency partially offset lower volume in the Filtration & Netting business. Segment adjusted EBITDA still increased modestly to $35.4 million, with margin up 50 basis points to 17.6%.

Cash flow and balance sheet

The company said the quarter produced exceptional free cash flow, which it used to reduce leverage. Net debt stood at $908.2 million at June 30, and total liquidity was approximately $345.5 million, including $66.3 million of cash and $279.2 million of revolver availability. Debt maturities are staggered through 2033.

Mativ also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.10 per share, payable on September 25, 2026.

Market reaction

The after-market response was muted, with shares holding flat following the release. That follows a significant rally into the print: the stock is up roughly 10% over the past week, about 18% over the past two weeks, and close to 29% over the past month. Investors appear to have anticipated the strength, and the lack of an additional pop suggests the result was already largely priced in.

What to watch

The company did not provide formal forward-looking guidance in the release, so the market will likely focus on execution momentum. The effective tax rate for the quarter was 47%, driven by the company's geographical earnings mix and valuation allowances in certain jurisdictions, which remains a drag on reported profitability. Input cost inflation and the impact of tariffs are also worth monitoring, though management said pricing actions have so far offset cost pressure.
