Murphy USA (NYSE:MUSA) Beats Q2 but Outlook Signals Slower H2

MURPHY USA INC (NYSE:MUSA) delivered a sizable second-quarter earnings beat on both the bottom line and revenue, but the stock is trading lower in the after-market session as the full-year outlook implies a moderating second half. The company reported net income of $209.1 million, or $11.27 per diluted share, for Q2 2026, comfortably above the $9.86 per share that analysts had projected. Revenue of $6.81 billion also came in well ahead of the $6.12 billion consensus estimate.

A beat on both lines

The quarter marked a clear upside surprise relative to Wall Street expectations:

  • EPS: $11.27 reported versus $9.86 consensus, an upside surprise of roughly 14%.
  • Revenue: $6.81 billion reported versus $6.12 billion consensus, an upside surprise of roughly 11%.
  • Net income: $209.1 million, up from $145.6 million in the prior-year quarter.
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $377.3 million, up from $286.0 million a year ago.

The strength came from both sides of the business. Total fuel contribution rose 32.0% to $518.8 million, supported by retail fuel margins of 35.1 cents per gallon versus 29.2 cents in Q2 2025, while retail fuel volumes increased 3.9% on a chain-wide basis and 0.5% on a same-store basis. Merchandise contribution increased 4.0% to $227.4 million, with average unit margins of 20.1%.

Why the market is reacting negatively

Despite the strong print, the stock is down roughly 3.6% in after-hours trading, extending a pullback that has left the shares about 5.7% lower over the past week and roughly 6% lower over the past two weeks. The reaction appears to be less about the reported quarter and more about what management's guidance implies for the rest of the year.

In the earnings release, management outlined a scenario that assumes second-half all-in fuel margins average 35 cents per gallon, compared with 37.9 cents per gallon in the first half. Under that assumption, the company expects full-year net income of approximately $636 million and Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $1.25 billion. With first-half net income of $345.4 million already on the books, the implied second-half contribution is roughly $291 million, or about $15.80 per diluted share, a step down from the $18.54 earned in the first half.

That implied moderation may be the main source of the after-hours selling. Management also guided toward the low end of its earlier ranges for merchandise contribution, store operating expenses and SG&A, while capital expenditures are expected to land at the high end of the $475 million to $525 million range.

Key operating metrics

  • Fuel contribution per gallon: 40.6 cents in Q2 2026 versus 32.0 cents in Q2 2025.
  • Total retail gallons: up 3.9%; same-store gallons up 0.5%.
  • Merchandise sales: $1.13 billion, up from $1.09 billion.
  • Store and other operating expenses: $308.7 million, up from $275.2 million, with higher payment fees accounting for roughly two-thirds of the increase.
  • Cash and cash equivalents: $175.4 million at June 30, 2026; revolving credit facility undrawn.

The company also refinanced its balance sheet during the quarter, issuing $500 million of 5.875% senior notes due 2034 and using the proceeds to retire its $300 million notes due 2027 and pay down revolver borrowings. Shareholder returns continued with $76.8 million of share repurchases and a quarterly dividend of $0.64 per share, up 28% year-over-year.

The outlook and what to watch

The central risk in the guidance is fuel price volatility. The full-year scenario depends on second-half fuel margins holding at 35 cents per gallon; any sustained pressure on that number would put the projected net income and EBITDA figures at risk. On the cost side, payment fees tied to elevated fuel prices, higher employee-related expenses and increased incentive accruals are all potential headwinds.

Consensus estimates currently project full-year revenue of approximately $33.7 billion for 2026, with third-quarter revenue estimated near $8.02 billion, so the market's focus will be on whether the company can sustain fuel margins at the level management has assumed.
