Value Automakers Lead EV Rotation as High-Multiple Growth Names Stall

The electric vehicle theme has become a tale of two baskets. Over the past month, the cap-weighted EV group is down roughly 13%, and the three-month decline is close to 18%. Those figures, however, are skewed by a handful of large, high-multiple names. The equal-weight average of the same universe is up more than 1.6% over the past month and shows a much more moderate three-month decline of about 10.8%. When the weighted and unweighted pictures diverge this sharply, capital is typically rotating within the theme rather than abandoning it. The recent leadership confirms that reading: value-priced automakers with visible earnings are taking market share from expensive growth stories.

The Value Side of the Rotation

The valuation spread inside the EV theme is extreme. The weighted average P/E sits near 173x, pulled up by the largest constituents, while the average across the group is closer to 68x. The stocks leading the recent advance are the ones at the cheap end of that range.

GENERAL MOTORS CO (NYSE:GM) is the clearest expression of the value rotation. It combines a trailing multiple in the single digits with the strongest relative strength in the selected group, a pairing that suggests the market is rewarding current earnings power over long-dated narrative.

  • Trailing P/E of 6.99 and forward P/E of 5.77
  • Year-over-year EPS growth of 41.1% in the most recent quarter
  • Relative strength of 89.95 and a one-month gain of 14.65%

The implication is straightforward. GM is inexpensive on conventional earnings measures and is still growing quarterly EPS at a double-digit pace. For investors who want EV exposure without paying for distant promises, that is an increasingly attractive profile.

FORD MOTOR CO (NYSE:F) points in the same direction. The stock trades at a high single-digit P/E, yields above 4%, and its most recent quarterly EPS came in ahead of consensus.

  • Trailing P/E of 8.43 and forward P/E of 7.46
  • Reported EPS of $0.42 versus an estimated $0.31 in the latest quarter
  • Dividend yield of 4.35% and relative strength of 69.13

Ford's numbers show the value side of the EV theme is not just about low multiples. Beating estimates while maintaining a meaningful payout gives investors a tangible return while the EV transition continues to develop.

Execution Beats Narrative in Pure Plays

The rotation is not confined to legacy automakers. Within the pure-play EV group, the market is also starting to separate winners from losers based on execution.

RIVIAN AUTOMOTIVE INC-A (NASDAQ:RIVN) is still unprofitable, but it posted a quarterly beat on both earnings and sales, and its relative strength of 84.83 places it in the top tier of stocks over the past year.

  • Revenue growth of 27.2% year over year in the most recent quarter
  • EPS of -$0.46 versus an estimated -$0.64
  • Free cash flow improvement of 30.7% over the past year
  • 12-month price gain of 33.9%

Rivian has historically been valued on its story. The improving operating metrics and the market's response suggest investors are now demanding measurable progress in exchange for patience. The direction of travel matters more than the current loss.

What the Divergence Means

The gap between the weighted and equal-weight performance of the EV theme is telling. Over the past year, the cap-weighted average is up modestly, while the average stock in the group is down nearly 17%. That discrepancy reflects a few large winners masking broad weakness. But the more recent one-month move flips the script: the cap-weighted average fell while the typical EV stock gained. Leadership is changing hands within the theme.

For investors, the message is to be selective. The EV theme is no longer a single trade. It is a collection of very different businesses, and the market is currently rewarding earnings visibility while punishing names that rely on narrative alone.
