Consumer Data Trips Up Wall Street's Rally as MDxHealth Snatches a Lifeline and Anthropic Redraws the AI Ceiling

Reddit chart of the day

Friday looked, at the bell, like a boring day.

Both indices closed marginally red, the mega-cap roster stayed in the corner, and one of the smallest names on the entire Nasdaq board did most of the talking. Underneath that quiet tape, though, the macro story shifted in a way that matters into next week and then the weekend delivered a set of numbers out of Anthropic that quietly moved the ceiling on this AI cycle.

The Rundown

  • A soft consumer confidence print and an unexpected drop in retail sales overshadowed the week's cooperative inflation data and dragged the major indices modestly lower.
  • The long end of the Treasury curve kept drifting higher even as the front end priced in a Fed comfortably on hold.
  • Oil ticked back up as Washington signalled its blockade of Iranian ports could run indefinitely, keeping the energy-inflation risk firmly on the board.
  • A weekend disclosure from a leading AI lab put quarterly revenue north of eleven billion dollars, reframing what scale in this cycle actually looks like.

The Consumer Wobbles and the Tape Reads It

Wednesday and Thursday gave Wall Street two clean inflation prints and a reason to believe the Fed can hold rates in September without much argument.

Friday walked most of that mood back. Consumer confidence took a sharp step down and retail sales fell against expectations of a modest increase. In an economy where household spending does most of the heavy lifting, that is not a footnote.

The Dow (DJI | ???0.20%) and the Nasdaq Composite (COMPX | ???0.28%) opened stable, drifted through the session and printed slightly lower into the close.

The bond market's reaction was consistent with what it has been telling us for weeks. The 10-year Treasury yield closed 5 basis points higher at 4.69%, and the 30-year finished at 5.27%. Even with a benign inflation backdrop and a Fed most likely on hold, long-duration buyers are still asking for more compensation.

That gap - soft near-term inflation on one side, a rising long end on the other - is going to matter into Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole appearance as Fed Chair later this month.

Elsewhere in the macro complex, WTI crude added just under a percent to close near $82 a barrel after the US signalled its naval blockade of Iranian ports could remain in place "indefinitely." That kept the Strait of Hormuz risk premium alive for a second straight session.

The euro strengthened to 1.1575 against the dollar.

MDxHealth's Escape Act

On a day this flat, one of the smallest names on the Nasdaq's roughly 3,400-ticker board did most of the work.

MDXHEALTH (MDXH | ???74.89%) rocketed to $0.80 after the Belgian-American medtech disclosed a $20 million capital raise that dealt with two problems in a single press release. The first was the shrinking cash runway.

The second, and more existential, was the threat of a Nasdaq delisting: at Thursday's close the company was valued around $24 million, well under the exchange's $35 million minimum market-cap threshold. Add roughly 44 million newly issued shares and Friday's rally, and the market cap now sits closer to $76 million.

I find these bottom-of-the-board rescues genuinely instructive. They rarely make the headlines the way a mega-cap does, but they are a decent reminder that at the micro-cap tier, financing risk is the dominant driver, technicals, analyst chatter and even fundamentals sit downstream of "does this company still have oxygen." When a name in that tier removes the delisting threat, the re-rating can be violent in either direction.

Reddit Joins the Index, and a Take-Private Bid Simmers

REDDIT INC-CL A (RDDT | ???12.63%) will replace AVALONBAY COMMUNITIES INC (AVB | ???0.08%) in the S&P 500 as of Tuesday's open.

AvalonBay is exiting because EQUITY RESIDENTIAL (EQR | ???0.00%) is acquiring it.

The mechanical piece is well understood - index funds become forced buyers ahead of the change - but the debate underneath is less settled. The bear case is that AI-native search assistants keep skimming traffic that used to convert into Reddit page views.

The bull case is that the same models need Reddit's authentically human content archive to train and to ground responses, and are paying real money for the privilege. Both propositions have merit, and Reddit's willingness to sit on the fence and monetize both sides is exactly why it has re-rated.

WORKDAY INC-CLASS A (WDAY | ???3.76%) gave back a piece of Thursday's near-18% rip, which was itself fuelled by reports that Silver Lake was in talks over a take-private. If private equity is genuinely starting to circle software again, that is a bigger deal than any single deal outcome.

The enterprise software sector has been grinding sideways for the better part of a year on multiple compression, and a serious sponsor bid tends to put a floor under it. I would watch the peer set here more than the stock itself.

Applied Materials: Solid Print, Ugly Footnote

APPLIED MATERIALS INC (AMAT | ???5.12%) delivered a clean top-and-bottom-line beat but disclosed a $220 million unrealized investment loss in the third quarter, and that was more than enough to spoil the tape's mood.

This is now a recurring pattern with the AI-adjacent semiconductor names: the operating number is fine or better than fine, and the market still finds a reason to sell.

When multiples and expectations have both marched this far ahead of the print, "beat" is barely enough and any accounting hair on the report gets amplified into a 5%-plus reaction. That is the price of leading the tape into an event, and it is worth remembering as we head into Walmart's (WMT) print next week, the traditional closer of the reporting season.

Space Names Split, Sandisk Keeps Running

The space complex traded in two directions.

INTUITIVE MACHINES INC (LUNR | ???8.26%) added nearly ten percent after Thursday's disclosure of 310% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2, the kind of print that unambiguously rewards a young space name.

LUNR_chart

On the other end, YORK SPACE SYSTEMS INC (YSS | ???5.04%) dropped 12% after cutting full-year earnings guidance, citing changes in how the US government now procures space systems. That procurement-policy shift is a subplot worth tracking, because it will not stop at York.

SANDISK CORP (SNDK | ???7.39%) extended Thursday's Investor Day rally as several analysts endorsed its long-term revenue plan, and CHEVRON CORP (CVX | ???1.16%) was the best-performing Dow name, riding the same firmer crude tape that kept the energy sector bid.

CVX_chart

SPACE EXPLORATION TECHN-CL A (SPCX | ???0.91%) pulled back roughly three percent ahead of next week's second tranche of newly tradable shares, the first tranche, released last Thursday, was followed by roughly a 22% run over the subsequent week, so it is unsurprising the market is bracing for the incremental supply.

Anthropic Redraws the Ceiling

Anthropic booked more than $11.5 billion in second-quarter revenue, up roughly fourteen-fold from $787 million in the same quarter last year.

First-quarter revenue was $4.73 billion, so we are looking at a business that more than doubled sequentially. The company also generated positive adjusted operating profit in Q2. Reuters, quoting sources on Saturday, put Anthropic's internal 2028 revenue target at $190–200 billion, and the Financial Times had earlier reported that a potential October IPO could target a valuation above $2 trillion, which would eclipse SpaceX's own $1.77 trillion debut back in June.

Whatever haircut you apply to internal projections, these numbers meaningfully change the frame. A private company at $11.5 billion of quarterly revenue with positive operating margin is no longer a "how big will the AI market get" story, it is now a "how much of that market is already showing up on someone's income statement" story. That reframes the read-across in two ways worth naming.

First, the hyperscaler-capex debate stops being about hope. The models being trained on that capex are already monetising at a run-rate few incumbents can match.

Second, the competitive positioning across the cloud stack now has real revenue attached to it. AMAZON.COM INC (AMZN | ???0.94%) is Anthropic's principal cloud partner and largest external investor; MICROSOFT CORP (MSFT | ???0.30%) is on the other side of the same trade via OpenAI.

The IPO, if it happens in October at anything near the mooted valuation, will also pull a sizeable amount of capital toward the AI complex and away from the rest of the tape. Worth setting aside some risk budget for.

Conclusion

Friday was quiet on the surface and busy underneath.

The consumer surprise took a chip out of the "inflation cooling, growth intact" story that supported Wednesday and Thursday's rally, and the long end of the Treasury curve continued to price a very different world from the front end.

MDxHealth's escape is a nice reminder that at the bottom of the board, financing risk is fundamental risk.

The weekend's Anthropic disclosure, however, is the item I would carry into Monday's session: the AI cycle just moved from "narrative" to "P&L," and the pricing of the entire complex - from hyperscalers to memory to power to networking - will have to catch up with that shift.
